Roosendaal in figures: kitchens, care and a sizeable industry
Roosendaal has 77,559 inhabitants on 10,650 hectares of land and ranks 50th of the 342 municipalities in the Netherlands (CBS 2024). CBS classifies the municipality as strongly urban, class 2, with 728 inhabitants per km².
| Sector | Establishments | Share | Duct demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business services | 2,090 | 22.1% | Office ventilation |
| Trade and hospitality | 1,900 | 20.1% | Grease in kitchen extraction |
| Government, education and care | 1,625 | 17.2% | Hygiene, residents' rooms, legionella |
| Manufacturing and energy | 1,535 | 16.2% | Process extraction |
| Culture, recreation, other services | 925 | 9.8% | Halls and sport |
With 122.2 establishments per 1,000 inhabitants, business density is lower than in the big cities, but the spread across kitchens, care and industry is broad. That calls for a kit that can handle more than one type of contamination.
Care complex with a catering kitchen: two kinds of ventilation ducts under one roof
In a nursing home or care home with its own kitchen, a grease laden extract runs alongside the comfort ventilation of rooms and corridors. The two need a different approach:
| Item | Rooms and corridors | Catering kitchen |
|---|---|---|
| Contamination | Dust, skin flakes, lint | Grease |
| Method | Dry, rotating brush ✓ | Wet ✓, dry only ✗ |
| Benchmark | Cleanliness classes EN 15780:2025 | NVRL: action at 500 µm, max. 200 µm after cleaning |
| Inspection | VDI 6022: every 2 years with, 3 years without humidification | Annually, with grease measurement |
The NVRL quality mark scheme, drawn up with TNO, explicitly targets grease contamination in kitchen extraction in hospitality, hospitals and care homes, among others. The quality mark is valid for 1 year if the limit values are met. The care side of the story is covered under nursing home duct cleaning.
Which brush suits which duct material?
The brush must loosen the dirt without damaging the duct. The US EPA mentions soft brushes for ducts made of fibreglass duct board and also for sheet metal, with the extracted dust passing through a HEPA filter or going outdoors. Danduct Clean supplies soft, standard and more aggressive Tynex brushes, from 100 to 600 mm.
| Duct | Brush | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Fibreglass duct board | Soft ✓ | No biocides, see below |
| Sheet metal, lightly soiled | Soft or normal ✓ | Standard choice in room ventilation |
| Sheet metal with stubborn dust | Tynex ✓ | Not in fragile material |
| Flexible hose | Soft, soft shaft ✓ | Take care in bends |

Chemicals and coatings in ducts: what to leave out
In care buildings there is a tendency to disinfect something after cleaning. Be cautious about that. According to the EPA, no biocides are registered for ducts made of fibreglass duct board, and coatings are not recommended as a routine measure. The EPA names three reasons to clean: visible mould, vermin or excessive dust. The EPA also notes that much of the dust stays attached to the wall and does not simply enter the room. Mechanical cleaning under negative pressure is therefore the basis; chemicals are no substitute and certainly not a standard step.
A sensible rule for a care setting: write in the maintenance plan that any chemical treatment needs a separate decision, with the reason and the product recorded. That stops a well meant extra step from turning into a habit nobody questions.
Duct cleaning Roosendaal without disturbing residents
In a residential care setting you are working in someone's home. Plan per corridor or wing, inform residents and staff in advance and keep each work zone under continuous negative pressure. If the extraction unit exhausts indoors, a HEPA filter of 99.97% at 0.3 µm is mandatory. Where there is humidification, a legionella approach is also required: the Working Conditions Decree (Arbobesluit, art. 4.87b) sets out measures for humidification systems and the employer records them in a management plan.
- Preferably finish rooms while the resident is elsewhere.
- Close off valves with foam caps before the brush starts turning.
- Clean the kitchen extract outside mealtimes.
- Have the hygiene inspection carried out by a different party from the one that cleans.
Good communication makes a big difference here. A short note on the door of each room, with the day and the expected duration, prevents surprises for residents and gives care staff something to point to when questions come up.
Three misconceptions about ducts in care and hospitality
- "If the filters are clean, the ducts are too." Filters catch a lot, but not everything; and in kitchen extract there is grease beyond the filters.
- "There is a legal frequency for kitchen ducts." No, KHN (Royal Dutch Hospitality Association) says it is not laid down by law. Insurers do require regular maintenance.
- "Always disinfect after cleaning." Not as a routine; according to the EPA, no biocides are registered for fibreglass duct board.
Each of these beliefs leads to either too little work or the wrong work. Checking them against the sources above takes a few minutes and saves a lot of discussion on site.
Fictional example: a residential care complex with a restaurant
A fictional residential care complex in Roosendaal has sixty apartments, a restaurant with its own kitchen and central air handling without humidification. The maintenance team cleans the kitchen extract wet once a year and has a grease measurement carried out for the NVRL quality mark. The apartment ventilation is inspected every 3 years and only cleaned where needed, with soft brushes. An external party carries out the inspection. This is a fictional example without a real client or measured values.

Frequently asked questions: air duct cleaning Roosendaal
What share of businesses in Roosendaal deals with kitchens or care?
According to CBS 2024, Roosendaal has 1,900 establishments in trade and hospitality (20.1%) and 1,625 in government, education and care (17.2%). Together that is 37.2% of the 9,475 business establishments. This group includes the kitchen extract systems with grease and the air handling of care and education buildings.
How do you clean the catering kitchen of a care institution in Roosendaal?
According to Eurovent, you clean commercial kitchen extract ducts with a wet method, because grease does not brush away well. Measure the grease layer before and after; the NVRL scheme uses an action value of 500 µm and a maximum of 200 µm after cleaning. Schedule the work outside mealtimes.
Which brush do you use for fibreglass duct board in a Roosendaal building?
The EPA mentions soft brushes for ducts made of fibreglass duct board and sheet metal. Danduct Clean supplies soft brushes from 100 to 600 mm. Only use the more aggressive Tynex brush in sturdy sheet metal ducts with stubborn dust, never in fragile material.
Can you disinfect ducts in a Roosendaal care institution after cleaning?
Be cautious. According to the EPA, no biocides are registered for fibreglass duct board and coatings are not recommended as a routine measure. Mechanical cleaning under negative pressure is the basis. If there is visible mould, consult a specialist and your institution's inspector.
How often should you inspect the air handling of a nursing home in Roosendaal?
The German guideline VDI 6022 requires a hygiene inspection every 2 years where there is humidification, and every 3 years without. With humidification, article 4.87b of the Arbobesluit on legionella also applies. Record both in the management plan and have the inspection done by a different party from the cleaning.
How long is an NVRL quality mark for a kitchen duct in Roosendaal valid?
The NVRL quality mark for cleanliness of air handling and ventilation systems is valid for 1 year if the hygiene limit values are met. You measure with a wet film thickness gauge, with a sample behind every extraction hood and per 10 metres of duct. Plan the next measurement every year.
When should ventilation ducts in Roosendaal be cleaned according to the EPA?
The EPA names three situations: visible mould in the duct, vermin and excessive dust. For commercial buildings, EN 15780:2025 also provides an assessment based on cleanliness classes. So have an inspection done first and then clean the runs that need it in a targeted way.
How do you work in a Roosendaal residential care complex without disturbing residents?
Plan per corridor or wing, inform residents and staff in advance and finish rooms while the resident is elsewhere. Close off valves with foam caps, keep the zone under continuous negative pressure and use a HEPA filter if the extraction unit exhausts indoors. That keeps the dust in the duct.
Is there a legal cleaning frequency for restaurant kitchens in Roosendaal?
No. KHN reports that the law does not specify how often a hospitality extract duct must be cleaned. You must, however, maintain the system so that no fire risk arises, and fire insurers require regular maintenance. In practice at least once a year is common, more often with a grill, fryer or wok.
