Many workshops in little space means that production, offices and homes are close together. Anyone cleaning ducts here therefore has to pay extra attention to containment: the dust you loosen must not end up anywhere else. This page shows how to record that in a scope of work and which equipment you use for it.
Lamers Reinigingstechniek from Zelhem supplies the machines made by Danduct Clean, extraction and sealing products. Lamers has no branch in Schiedam and does not clean ducts itself.

Schiedam in figures: the highest share of manufacturing of the 51 municipalities
Schiedam has 81,838 inhabitants and ranks 48th among Dutch municipalities. With 4,596 inhabitants per km², Schiedam ranks 6th in population density among the 50 largest municipalities plus Doetinchem (CBS 2024).
| CBS sector | Schiedam | Share | Average of 51 municipalities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing and energy | 3,050 | 26.4% | 13.2% |
| Business services | 2,470 | 21.4% | 26.2% |
| Government, education and care | 1,870 | 16.2% | 17.7% |
| Trade and hospitality | 1,660 | 14.4% | 16.0% |
| Culture, recreation and other services | 1,135 | 9.8% | 11.7% |
The average has been calculated over all establishments of the 51 municipalities together. Manufacturing is twice as strongly represented in Schiedam as on average. Offices are relatively less common.
Little space, a lot of activity: why containment counts
In a municipality where a workshop can be next to a block of flats or an office, the spread of dust is not a detail. If you clean a duct without sealing it off, the loosened dust travels with the airflow: to other rooms, or outside to the neighbours' facade.
The solution is containment. A University of Maryland specification requires every section to be cleaned to be kept under continuous negative pressure with extraction units. If such a unit exhausts inside the building, a HEPA filter with 99.97% at 0.3 µm is mandatory. The American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the same in other words: HEPA, or exhaust to the outside.
The means for this, from sealing balloons to extraction, are under negative pressure HEPA extraction for businesses.
Recording duct cleaning Schiedam in a scope of work
The American standard ACR 2025 from NADCA describes what a good assignment contains. You can use those parts one to one for a scope of work in Schiedam:
| Part | What do you record? |
|---|---|
| Inspection | which ducts, which contamination, photos of the starting situation |
| Safety plan | combustible dust, working at height, access to the hall |
| Containment | which sections are sealed off and how |
| Negative pressure | extraction unit, filter class, exhaust point |
| Cleaning method | brush, compressed air or manual, per duct section |
| Verification | surface comparison or gravimetric vacuum test |
A scope of work drawn up this way prevents disputes afterwards, especially if several parties occupy the building. Have each party that uses the building see the containment part before the work starts, so that nobody is surprised by a sealed grille or a running extraction unit. The step by step course of a cleaning job is under duct cleaning procedure.
Production hall and office: two systems, two yardsticks
Many Schiedam businesses combine a production area with an office or canteen. The European cleanliness standard EN 15780 is not intended for industrial process installations. For local exhaust ventilation in the hall, the occupational health and safety rules for dust at the workplace apply; for the office and canteen, the cleanliness classes from EN 15780 do apply.
Fictional example: a company with a packaging line and an office floor above it. The extraction above the line is inspected more often and cleaned with a more aggressive brush. The office ventilation follows a calmer interval. Both runs get their own sealing plan, so that dust from the hall does not get into the office supply.
| System | Yardstick | Approach in the fictional example |
|---|---|---|
| Extraction above the production line | Occupational rules for dust at the workplace | More frequent inspection, more aggressive brush |
| Office and canteen ventilation | Cleanliness classes from EN 15780 | Calmer interval |
| Both | Own sealing plan | No dust from the hall in the office supply |
Food processing: no air from dirty to clean
If you work in a business that processes food, an extra requirement is added. The verification list of the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) for new approvals mentions three points that relate directly to air and ducts:
- avoid airflows from contaminated to clean rooms;
- make filters and parts that must be cleaned or replaced regularly easily accessible;
- design ceilings and fittings so that dirt, condensation, mould and loose particles are kept to a minimum.
A BRCGS guide also helps to determine the supply air category and filtration, with Eurovent 4/23 as a guide. How to translate that into duct maintenance is under food factory ventilation cleaning.
Ventilation duct cleaning Schiedam: which equipment belongs with it?
For work with a lot of containment, besides a brushing machine you mainly need good sealing and extraction products.
- Brushing machine: the Electric DC4 brushing machine in practice cleans ducts of 100 to 600 mm up to 30 metres deep, also vertically, with soft, normal or more aggressive brushes.
- Extraction: Danduct has extraction fans with hoses and filtration to keep the duct section under negative pressure.
- Sealing: duct sealing balloons and foam caps for valves and grilles.
- Access: resealable inspection hatches where they are missing.
A comparison of the machines is under air duct cleaning tools explained.
Air duct cleaning in Schiedam, Rotterdam and Nissewaard
Schiedam is squeezed between larger neighbours. The page on air duct cleaning in Rotterdam shows that 15.0% of establishments there fall under manufacturing and energy; on the page about ductwork cleaning for Nissewaard businesses it is 19.9% (CBS 2024). A cleaning contractor serving the region therefore deals with production everywhere, but nowhere as much as in Schiedam.

Frequently asked questions: air duct cleaning Schiedam
Why is containment during duct cleaning in Schiedam extra important?
Because Schiedam has a lot of business activity on a small area: 1,781 hectares of land and 4,596 inhabitants per km² (CBS 2024). Workshops, offices and homes are close together. Dust you loosen during cleaning must therefore stay in the duct, with sealing and continuous negative pressure.
How many Schiedam businesses fall under manufacturing and energy?
According to CBS 2024, that is 3,050 of the 11,535 establishments, or 26.4%. That is the highest share among the 50 largest municipalities plus Doetinchem, where the average is 13.2%. As a result, local exhaust ventilation is more common in Schiedam than in most other municipalities.
Which filter do you need if the extraction unit in a Schiedam building exhausts indoors?
A HEPA filter with an efficiency of 99.97% at 0.3 µm. That is stated in a University of Maryland specification, which requires every duct section being cleaned to be kept under continuous negative pressure. If you can exhaust the air to the outside, that is an alternative according to the EPA.
What do you put in a scope of work for duct cleaning in Schiedam?
Use the parts from NADCA ACR 2025: inspection, a safety plan, containment, negative pressure, the cleaning method per duct section and verification of the result. Record for each part who does what. That prevents disputes, especially in buildings with several users.
Does EN 15780 apply to the production extraction of a company in Schiedam?
No. EN 15780 is not intended for industrial process installations. For local exhaust ventilation, the occupational health and safety rules for dust at the workplace apply. For the office and canteen of the same company you do use the cleanliness classes from EN 15780. Keep both systems separate in your planning.
What does the NVWA ask of the air handling in a Schiedam food business?
The verification list for new approvals mentions avoiding airflows from contaminated to clean rooms, easily accessible filters and parts, and fittings that limit dirt, condensation, mould and loose particles. Duct maintenance touches all three of those points, so include them in your inspection plan.
How do you show that a duct in Schiedam is clean after cleaning?
With a surface comparison, in which you compare the duct visually with a reference, or with a gravimetric vacuum test according to NADCA, in which you weigh the remaining dust. Record the result with photos taken at the same spots as during the inspection beforehand.
Which Lamers machine suits workshop ducts in Schiedam?
For ducts of 100 to 600 mm, the DC4 is the basis: up to 30 metres reach, also vertically and through 90 degree bends, with soft, normal or more aggressive Tynex brushes. Combine it with filtered extraction and sealing balloons. For wider ducts, ask Lamers for advice.
Can a cleaning contractor serve both Schiedam and Rotterdam with one kit?
Usually yes. In both municipalities you deal with production, offices and hospitality, only in a different proportion. A brushing machine with an aggressive brush set, extraction with HEPA and sealing products covers most of the work. For very small ducts you can add compressed air with a camera.
Does Lamers have a branch in Schiedam?
