Of the 107,710 business establishments in Rotterdam, 15.0% are in manufacturing and energy and 15.3% in trade and hospitality. Together that is almost a third. This shifts the focus from ordinary office ventilation towards local exhaust ventilation, dust from production and grease from commercial kitchens.

This page is written for facilities teams, installers and cleaning contractors working in Rotterdam. You will read which duct types you encounter, where the limits of a brushing machine lie, how to work safely with combustible dust and which equipment from Lamers Reinigingstechniek in Zelhem fits the job.

Duct cleaning Rotterdam: from office floor to production hall

Rotterdam has a broad profile. The breakdown by sector shows that one type of job will not get you far.

Note: EN 15780 applies to ventilation systems, but not to industrial process installations. For the extraction of a machine or production line, look at occupational health and safety requirements and the manufacturer's instructions, not just at the ventilation standard.

Industrial extraction in Rotterdam: which requirements count?

In production, it is all about the employee. Article 4.5 of the Working Conditions Decree (Arbobesluit) requires that when contaminated air is extracted, sufficient clean air is supplied at the same time. An extract duct that is half blocked draws less air and the dust stays hanging in the hall.

This is covered in more depth under air duct cleaning in industry.

Ducts larger than 600 mm: where is the limit of a brushing machine?

In halls and large air handling systems you come across ducts that are wider than a standard brush set can handle. An honest comparison helps.

MachineDiameterShaft reachDrive
Danduct Clean DC4100 to 600 mm, round and squareup to 30 melectric, 230 volts
Danduct PD4brushes 100 to 600 mm2.5 to 7.5 mpower drill
LIFA AIR CombiCleaner 40 (for comparison)400 to 1200 mm40 mother manufacturer

For most ducts in offices, schools and shops, the DC4 duct cleaning machine for businesses does the job: the solid steel shaft keeps the brush centred and the automatic left to right system does the work. If you regularly work in ducts above 600 mm, discuss this with Lamers beforehand, so that you do not turn up at a Rotterdam site with the wrong set. The full range is listed under duct cleaning equipment for businesses.

Combustible dust and grease: safety comes first

Two risks make industrial and kitchen ducts different from office ducts. Fine wood dust and flour dust can cause a dust explosion; TNO mentions more than 60 g/m³ of fine dust as the limit above which an explosion is possible. In EX zones, a vacuum cleaner must be ATEX 114 certified.

Grease in an extract duct is highly flammable, Rabobank warns, and according to the bank most hospitality fires start in the kitchen. For Rotterdam commercial kitchens with a grill, fryer or wok, cleaning at least once a year is the minimum that KHN (Royal Dutch Hospitality Association) mentions. Also see commercial kitchen ventilation cleaning for the grease layer thicknesses that insurers use.

Step by step plan for an industrial cleaning project

  1. Make an inventory: length, diameter, shape, bends and material. According to Eurovent, inspection openings should be no more than 10 metres apart or after at most two bends of 45 degrees or more.
  2. Determine the contamination: dry dust, grease, flour or a mixture. That decides the brush and the method.
  3. Choose the brush: soft, standard or the more aggressive Tynex, in sizes from 100 to 600 mm.
  4. Seal off and extract: keep the work section under continuous negative pressure. With duct sealing and extraction for businesses you limit the work area.
  5. Clean and check: record the result with photographs or a surface comparison.
  6. Report: a short report per duct section makes the next round easier.

A tip for sites in the port area and on business parks: check access times and permits for working at height before the day itself. A job that is well prepared on paper is often finished in half the time on site.

Fictional example: a workshop with welding extraction and a canteen

Suppose a fictional metalworking company in Rotterdam has a workshop with local exhaust ventilation above the welding stations, an office section and a canteen with a small cooker hood. The facilities team wants to do the maintenance in house.

The welding extraction needs a sturdy brush and good removal of fine dust. The office can be done with a standard brush and negative pressure. The canteen is light kitchen work, but grease is still grease. In practice you therefore make three work packages, each with its own brush choice and its own interval. Anyone who puts that schedule on paper once prevents the kitchen duct from being left untouched for years without anyone noticing.

What goes into each work package

Ventilation duct cleaning in Rotterdam and neighbouring cities

With 21,842 hectares of land, Rotterdam is larger than Amsterdam. Projects are therefore further apart and you want a kit that is easy to move. If you also work in the region, see air duct cleaning in Den Haag, with 99,585 establishments, or air duct cleaning in Breda, with 28,900.

All municipalities with their figures are listed under ductwork cleaning per municipality. If you want to know which machine suits your Rotterdam projects, use duct cleaner quotation for cleaning contractors to request a callback.

Frequently asked questions: air duct cleaning Rotterdam

Why is industrial extraction such a big topic in Rotterdam?

Because, according to CBS 2024, Rotterdam has 16,130 business establishments in manufacturing and energy, 15.0% of all establishments. In absolute numbers that is more than in Amsterdam. These businesses often have local exhaust and process extraction, where dust, grease or shavings build up in the ducts.

Does the extraction of a Rotterdam production line fall under EN 15780?

No. EN 15780 covers the cleanliness of ventilation systems in buildings and does not apply to industrial process installations. For process extraction, look at the Working Conditions Decree, such as article 4.5 on the supply of clean air when contaminated air is extracted, and at the maintenance instructions from the installation supplier.

Which machine do you use for air ducts up to 600 mm in a Rotterdam hall?

For round and square ducts from 100 to 600 mm, the Danduct Clean DC4 is the logical choice. It has a reach of up to 30 metres, handles vertical sections and 90 degree bends and runs on 230 volts. The speed is adjustable and the left to right system can be set on a timer.

What do you do with ducts wider than 600 mm at a Rotterdam company?

Then the duct falls outside the range of the standard brush sets of 100 to 600 mm. Other manufacturers have machines for larger sizes, such as the LIFA CombiCleaner 40 for 400 to 1200 mm. Discuss such projects with Lamers beforehand, so you know which solution fits the range.

How often must a Rotterdam commercial kitchen clean its extract duct?

There is no fixed statutory frequency. KHN mentions at least once a year as common practice, more often with a grill, fryer or wok. Rabobank advises twice a year for a restaurant that fries. Insurers require regular maintenance and want you to prove with a report, photographs and certificate that the duct is clean.

Do ducts in Rotterdam need extra attention for dust explosions?

That depends on what is produced, not on the city. With fine wood dust, flour or sugar, a dust explosion is possible above 60 g/m³, according to TNO. In EX zones an ATEX 114 certified industrial vacuum cleaner is required. With such ducts, always start from a risk analysis before you begin.

Can a Rotterdam facilities team clean industrial ducts in house?

Yes, if the team has the right equipment, brushes and extraction and knows where the risks lie. Start with an inventory of diameters, bends and contamination. Then choose the brush and the method. Lamers supplies the machines and can advise which kit fits; your own team carries out the work.

How many access panels do you need in a long Rotterdam extract duct?

According to the Eurovent recommendation, inspection openings are no more than 10 metres apart, or after at most two bends of 45 degrees or more. For ducts wider than 500 mm the panel should be at least 500 by 400 mm. If panels are missing, you can fit resealable access panels afterwards.

Which brush do you choose for contaminated industrial ducts in Rotterdam?

Danduct supplies soft, standard and more aggressive Tynex brushes in sizes from 100 to 600 mm. For stubborn dust or caked on contamination you would sooner choose the Tynex version, for fragile ducts a soft brush. A DC4 Large package contains an aggressive brush set of 7 pieces next to the standard set.

Does Lamers have a branch in Rotterdam for duct cleaning equipment?

No, Lamers Reinigingstechniek B.V. is based in Zelhem in the Achterhoek region. The family business has supplied professional cleaning equipment for more than 50 years and works internationally. For Rotterdam projects you request a quote, ask for a callback or send a question through the site. Your own team does the cleaning itself.
